A collective approach to a complex subject
Combatives is developed by a group of practitioners, professionals, instructors and specialists who contribute directly and indirectly from different fields connected to human conflict and protection.
Violence is too complex to be understood from a single discipline or reduced to a collection of physical techniques.
Martial practice can reveal one part of the problem. Security professionals may reveal another. History, behavioral research, education, health, emergency response, documented incidents and the experience of people who have lived through violence can reveal others.
Different backgrounds produce different questions. We consider that a strength.
No single person, instructor, discipline or fighting system has all the answers.
OUR POSITION
Human conflict does not offer universal answers
Context, vulnerability, environment, relationships, surprise, physical disparity and consequences can completely change the problem before a physical confrontation even begins.
DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
Knowledge becomes stronger when it can be questioned
Contribution does not require agreement. Different professional, academic and practical perspectives can expose assumptions and limitations that one field alone may miss.

Practical experience with movement, resistance, physical interaction and martial training contributes to the discussion without being treated as universal proof.

NO UNIVERSAL FORMULA
Context changes everything
Violence does not happen under standardized conditions.
Age, physical condition, surprise, fear, location, relationships, weapons, multiple people, vulnerable family members and countless other variables can radically change what is possible.
A response appropriate for one person may be dangerous for another. A decision that makes sense in one environment may be impossible in another.
For that reason, Combatives does not present a technique, instructor or fighting system as a universal answer to human conflict.
Surprise
Changes perception, available time and possible decisions.
Physical disparity
Strength, size, age and physical condition can alter outcomes.
Environment
Vehicles, confined spaces, crowds, stairs and obstacles change what can realistically be done.
Other people
Children, relatives, bystanders and multiple aggressors may completely change priorities.
RESPONSIBILITY
Teaching protection creates responsibility
A technique that works during a controlled demonstration is not, by itself, evidence that the same result will occur in an uncontrolled confrontation.
Resistance changes the problem. Surprise changes the problem. Physical disparity changes the problem. Weapons change the problem. Multiple people change the problem.
There are situations in which physical resistance may become necessary. There are also situations in which attempting it may increase danger.
Responsible instruction must be prepared to discuss both.
We are especially concerned when instruction creates confidence without equally explaining uncertainty, limitations and consequences.
False confidence can influence someone to remain in danger, confront unnecessarily or attempt a response under conditions that are fundamentally different from those experienced in training.
Our responsibility is not to convince people that they can win every confrontation. It is to help them understand violence well enough to make better decisions.
INDEPENDENCE
Violence should never become a tool for selling fear
Combatives was not created to frighten people into becoming students.
Violence does not need to be exaggerated, dramatized or manipulated to generate urgency, commercial pressure or enrollment.
At this stage of my life, I do not depend on selling courses or operating an academy as my source of income.
That independence matters.
It allows me, and the people who contribute to Combatives, to question assumptions, recognize limitations and openly discuss situations in which physical confrontation may not be the best decision.
It also allows us to question teaching practices when they may create unrealistic expectations, false confidence or unnecessary exposure to danger.
Violence is already serious enough without being turned into advertising.
HOW WE APPROACH KNOWLEDGE
Evidence, experience and testimony are not the same thing
Different sources can contribute to understanding violence and human conflict. Credibility requires identifying what kind of information we are using and where its limits remain.

Scientific research
Scientific findings should be identified as research and interpreted according to methodology, population, scope and limitations.

Official data
Statistics require source, period, unit and methodological context before conclusions are drawn from them.

Historical evidence
Documentation and historical scholarship should remain distinct from legend, tradition and modern interpretation.

Professional experience
Field experience can provide valuable insight without automatically becoming a universal rule.

Testimony
Personal accounts can reveal important realities while remaining individual experiences that require appropriate context.

Practical training
Training can test ideas, expose limitations and develop experience. It cannot guarantee the outcome of a future real incident.
