COMBATIVES · SÃO PAULO · BRAZIL
Combatives is an independent project dedicated to the study of violence, human behavior, protection and decision making under uncertainty.
Its field of interest begins before physical contact.
Prevention, perception, communication, environment, vulnerability, behavior and decision making are studied alongside martial practice, historical conflicts and documented real world incidents.
The objective is not to reduce violence to a fighting problem. It is to understand the larger process in which confrontation may become only one possible outcome.
The physical confrontation is often only the visible part of a much larger problem.
FIELD OF STUDY
Combatives examines different dimensions of conflict instead of treating every problem as a physical encounter.
The subjects often overlap. That overlap is precisely where many important questions appear.
01
Urban violence, domestic violence, vulnerable populations, victimization, prevention and the social environments in which violence develops.
02
Perception, fear, coercion, escalation, communication, decision making and behavior under pressure.
03
Documented cases studied through context, sequence, warning signs, constraints, decisions and consequences.
04
War, resistance, intelligence, leadership, logistics, adaptation, terrain, uncertainty and human error.
05
Martial systems studied within their historical environments, original purposes, transformations and cultural context.
06
Risk recognition, communication, avoidance, mobility, protection of vulnerable people and decisions under uncertainty.
HISTORY AS EVIDENCE
Military history, resistance movements, intelligence operations, martial traditions, expeditions, crises and urban conflicts provide records of people making decisions with incomplete information and real consequences.
We study these events without attempting to turn historical warfare into simplistic lessons for modern self defense.
Instead, history allows us to examine recurring questions involving perception, surprise, preparation, adaptation, leadership, error, environment and uncertainty.
REAL INCIDENTS
Real incidents provide information that training rooms, demonstrations and hypothetical scenarios cannot produce by themselves.
Documented cases are examined to understand how an event developed, what preceded it, what constraints were present, where decisions occurred and what consequences followed.
The purpose is not to judge victims with the advantage of hindsight. It is to understand the event more accurately.
PROTECTION
Protection may involve perception, communication, environmental awareness, movement, seeking assistance, protecting another person, leaving an area or preventing a situation from escalating.
In some circumstances physical action may become necessary. In others, physical confrontation may increase the risk.
The relevant question is not simply whether a technique exists. It is whether a decision is appropriate for the person, environment, threat and consequences involved.
SCOPE
Combatives does not attempt to replace specialized professional disciplines.
Instead, it connects questions that frequently meet in real incidents but are often studied separately.
01
Violence, prevention and public safety.
02
Human behavior, perception and decision making.
03
History, strategy and documented conflict.
04
Martial traditions, combat sports and physical practice.
05
Children, families, older people and vulnerable populations.
06
Real incidents, professional experience and testimony.

Articles and studies are developed through research, documented cases and relevant specialist material.
Whenever appropriate, individual publications provide references that allow readers to examine sources and continue the subject independently.
Academic research
Scientific and specialist literature relevant to each subject.
International and public institutions
Official data, reports, archives and specialist organizations.
Historical archives
Primary documents, institutional collections and historical scholarship.
Documentaries and testimony
Recorded experiences from witnesses, victims, professionals and specialists when relevant to the subject.

COMBATIVES
Violence is complex. No article, training session, historical example or individual discipline can remove that complexity.
Our purpose is to study it seriously enough to improve understanding, awareness and the quality of the questions being asked.
REALITY AND PROTECTION
Violence may involve coercion, control, neglect, exploitation, stalking, psychological abuse or sexual violence before, alongside or without a physical attack. Protection starts with understanding what is actually happening.
CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
A missing-person record can involve different circumstances, including voluntary absence, family conflict, loss of contact and criminal situations. The distinction matters. What also matters is rapid reporting, information sharing and understanding the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
WOMEN
Intimate partner violence can involve coercive control, stalking, threats, psychological aggression, sexual violence, financial restriction and physical assault. Looking only for injuries can mean looking at the problem too late.
OLDER PEOPLE
Neglect, abandonment, financial exploitation, psychological abuse, medication control and physical violence may involve relatives, caregivers or other people with regular access to the victim, their home, finances or daily routine.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Sexual violence cannot be understood only through stranger-danger scenarios. Prevention also requires attention to access, trust, dependency, vulnerability, boundaries and relationships in which the offender may already be known to the victim.
