When the incident goes to the ground: resistance, physical control, and officer injuries

COMBATIVES RESEARCH CS-001 POLICE PHYSICAL CONTROL

ARTICLE 03 · GROUND AND CONTROL

When the incident goes to the ground.

Reaching the ground does not decree the end of resistance. Nor does it automatically mean that tactical control has been consolidated.

An intervention can escalate rapidly from a standing engagement to a chaotic scenario: abrupt destabilization, takedowns, postural recovery efforts (attempts to stand up), evasive rotation, disputes over hand dominance, the arrival of police backup, and severe friction during handcuffing.

For the rigors of state physical restraint research, going to the ground must never be treated as the mere conclusion of a projection technique.

It represents, in reality, the outbreak of a new operational phase of the incident.

TACTICAL DISTINCTION

A takedown does not guarantee control. A dominant position is not synonymous with custody.

REAL-WORLD INCIDENT

Police ground combat does not operate under sports logic.

Hand-to-hand combat modalities provide a vital motor framework regarding base of support, leverage, positional control, and ground kinematics.

However, street conflict imposes exclusive vectors to the equation.

Duty belt. Lethal weapon retention. Radio communicator. Ballistic vest. Sharp edges and uneven surfaces. Spatial confinement. Proximity to traffic and vehicles. Interaction with multiple aggressors or bystanders. The chronic risk of concealed weapons access.

The objective of the combat obeys a different legal matrix.

In policing, the outcome does not occur by merely obtaining a positional advantage. It is mandatory to nullify the suspect's mobility, ensure the suppression of access to the hands, block escape routes, prevent the drawing of blades or firearms, execute handcuffing under tension, and ultimately, declare the arrest.

The research object does not evaluate "who scored points on the ground." It deciphers how the crisis transitioned from verbal failure to absolute control.

TRANSITION KINEMATICS

The gap between vertical combat and handcuffed restraint.

The instant bodies collide with the pavement, a chain of biomechanical transitions can be triggered in fractions of a second.

Resistance
Destabilization
Takedown
Ground Struggle

Custody

The linear order outlined above is not an infallible rule.

An individual may withstand the takedown and persevere in the fight. They may articulate explosive escapes. They may cover their torso over their own arms. Symmetrically, the law enforcement officer may collapse and lose a previously established top guard.

The emergency arrival of backup units completely reconfigures the mechanics of restraint.

Therefore, an observational decoding must be mature enough to record the micro state changes, refraining from shelving the complexity of the event under the generic label of "physical confrontation."

NIJ DATA · INJURY RATES

Resistance and morbidity are closely linked phenomena in the literature.

Reports funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) have examined injury rates—encompassing both the police force and the civilian scope—during coercive interactions.

In a multi-agency (interdepartmental) balance, the rates revealed drastic fluctuation depending on the audited institutions.

01 10–20%

spectrum of injuries identified in police officers during use of force events computed by the agencies.

02 17–64%

range of injuries recorded in the civilian population (subjects) within the same sample universe.

03 Direct association

acute degrees of reactive resistance proved to be statistically associated with an increased risk of injury for both parties.

The chasm between the extremes of these percentages demands analytical rigor. It proves that lethality and damage vary brutally depending on agency guidelines, local doctrine, demographics, the clinical definition of what constitutes an injury, and sanctioned operational methods.

Given this, these percentage margins must never be transposed as a universal "rate" of police morbidity.

THE DYNAMICS OF TAKEDOWNS AND DAMAGE

The ground acts as a marker, not the primary cause.

Under the scrutiny of NIJ research, analysts outlined the operational profile of the Richland County Sheriff's Department in contrast to the Columbia Police Department, both in South Carolina.

In the qualitative and quantitative extraction reviewed by the institute, the peak of documented injuries in both agencies coincided with the fraction of the conflict where officers and suspects engaged in friction on the ground.

The database also pointed out tactical discrepancies: the proportion of injuries derived from fighting on the asphalt was not identically mirrored between the two departments, suggesting local doctrinal influences.

This premise elevates the ground environment to the level of a critical research zone. However, it does not endorse the simplistic conclusion that "gravitational projection" is the generating force of the injury.

Interventions that degenerate into ground struggles, by definition, tend to carry more violent opposition rates, greater energy depletion, an over-density of officers in containment, and a considerable chronological drag of the combat.

The methodological warning is imposed: statistical correlation does not certify isolated causality.

Mapping the structural risk of an injury requires dissecting the triggers deployed moments before the takedown, the virulence of the ground confrontation, and the technique chosen to stabilize the crisis.

BOZEMAN ET AL. · 2018

Legitimate use of force rarely results in severe trauma.

A referential study acts as an anchor to position the incidence of injuries under their proper statistical proportions.

William P. Bozeman led a two-year prospective, multicenter clinical trial focused on the casework of three mid-sized police agencies.

The audit isolated 893 critical events tied to use of force, which encompassed 1,399 applied tactical actions.

In a universe of 914 evaluated suspects, the evidence was definitive: 898 individuals—which corresponds to 98% of the cohort—showed no injuries whatsoever or suffered only minor abrasions.

Traumas clinically cataloged as "moderate or severe" occurred in exactly 16 people, representing a minuscule slice of 1.8%.

Importantly, the study attests that these higher-severity injuries were predominantly linked to lethal or less-lethal variables (firearms discharges and the deployment of K-9s/patrol dogs).

The operational labels "use of force," "empty-hand combat," and "traumatic injury" do not constitute equivalent semantic categories.

CS-001 · VISUAL AUDIT

The "went to the ground" flag lacks descriptive power.

Dissecting the engineering of an urban combat compels research to fractionate the frames formed after the structural collapse of the takedown.

In opposition to importing playful or sports nomenclatures originating from Judo or Jiu-Jitsu, a police observational matrix must be based on the aseptically neutral reading of the aggressor's bodily states.

01

Rupture / Takedown

The scenario abandons verticality (stand-up combat), but the positional dominance of the parties remains an unknown.

02

Unstable Ground

There was impact against the pavement, yet the suspect retains a critical degree of mobility and active reactive opposition.

03

Partial Dominance

The target's biomechanics suffer strong structural containment, but pockets of resistance remain active, making clean access to the upper limbs unfeasible.

04

Consolidated Control

The avenues of articulation and tactical opposition are suppressed to the exact degree to support the progression toward mechanical containment (handcuffing).

05

Tactical Regression (Loss)

Rupture of the previously imposed joint lock, throwing the incident back to the status of mobility, evasion, or physical re-engagement.

06

Extraction and Isolation of Arms

The stage where the torso may be anchored against the floor, but the dispute migrates to the traction and isolation of the hands/forearms assembly.

07

Handcuffing Process

The insertion of the restraint rings characterizes an individual and isolated operational rubric, theoretically untethered from the takedown maneuver.

08

Cessation and Custody

Extinction of combat variables, configuring the final, lawful, and stable framing of the subject before the State.

MANDATORY METRICS

Ground combat read through the observational method.

By submitting raw data from body-worn cameras to observational methodology, a robust matrix of auditable questions is extracted.

01

Which structural element absorbed the first contact with the ground?

02

Did the officer sustain their base and vertical engagement, or did gravity impose their projection tethered to the subject?

03

What is the exact census of officers who exerted a simultaneous physical force vector post-takedown?

04

Did the opponent's profile indicate an attempt to bridge (ground reversal), perimeter escape, or waistline blocking?

05

Was there a motor indication of an assault against the officer's own holster, spare patrol equipment, or the drawing of external artifacts?

06

Chronometry in milliseconds: the latency between the floor impact and the freezing of the aggressor's movement.

07

Was there a blatant failure of the containment lock that demanded restarting the force escalation?

08

Time window mapped from the gravitational impact until the uninterrupted locking of the handcuffs.

09

Which fracture in the exact kinetic sequence generated the stress or the injury outcome?

10

What chainings (stimulus and tactical response) build the statistical gold standard of the analyzed sample?

RESEARCH BLIND SPOTS

Camera framing does not nullify the barrier of the unknown.

BWC (Body-Worn Cameras) systems, dashcams, and local video surveillance networks enable admirable forensic dissection, but analytical omnipresence remains a myth.

At the lower elevation of the line of sight (ground combat), perspective strangulation is accentuated: shielding of torsos, hands anchored under the suspect's own weight, frames corrupted by close-quarters struggle, light suppression, or visual occlusion generated by the tactical armor of the backup team itself.

Faced with this bottleneck, coding integrity demands that the researcher reject inferences (guesswork), excusing them from marking binary variables in the absence of visual clarity.

CATEGORIZATION: POSITIVE CONFIRMATION · NEGATION · INDETERMINATION BIASES · NOT APPLICABLE EVENT

The video's optical clearance index acts, in itself, as a variable. Data extraction originating from a perfectly panoramic capture flaunts a summarily higher evidentiary caliber than that salvaged from suppressed or chaotic framings.

TRAINING VS. DATA SCIENCE

Diagnosis guides technique, not the reverse.

Academically confirming that preventative policing routinely culminates in ground friction does not authorize the hasty endorsement of this or that martial art into academy curricula.

This is a sequential and dependent analytical stage.

The initial filter is purely phenotypic: measuring the incidence of the takedown, mapping the theater of operations (surface, incline, lighting), clocking the asphalt retention, understanding the physiology of the positional transition, and scrutinizing the statistical emergence of injuries.

The data maps the terrain. Only in possession of the topographical blueprint does doctrine dare to draw the routes of technical training.

CS-001 — COMBATIVES Physical Control Study

Observational Study of the Dynamics of Resistance and Physical Control in Law Enforcement Incidents

This manuscript makes up the research and foundation tripod that drives the development of the protocols at the core of CS-001.

One of the program's fundamental vectors aims to monitor and decode the transition toward the pavement, purifying the analysis from the false illusion that "reaching the ground equates to exercising control" and shielding the study against the academic bias of classifications inherited from contact sports.

The non-negotiable focus rests on the verifiable fractures of the event: active mobility rate, spasmodic resistance, positional ratio, joint and limb sealing, biomechanical defenses and ground reversal rolls, forced traction of the arm to the waistline, and the mechanical stabilization of the handcuffs.

We reinforce once again that the findings and tabulated data present in this compilation represent the intellectual architecture of their respective sources, absolved from mirroring the original and unpublished theses processed by the CS-001 project itself.

It is ratified, as an academic duty, the dogma of data science: mere empirical correlation does not validate sentences of exclusive causality. Operations deployed under severe rates of rebellion or flight tend, intrinsically, to exhibit dilated chronological windows, greater ferocity in physical friction, the collapse of multiple tactical routines, a critical need for numerical suppression (backup), and a drastic susceptibility to vertical interruption (ground confrontation). The nominative use of security councils, state corporations, researchers, and scientific compendiums carries a strict intent of bibliographic substantiation and in no way authorizes assumptions regarding endorsements, seals of approval, co-participations, or logistical support destined for the COMBATIVESℱ platform.

Vertical collapse is, in essence, the prologue to restraint.

Recognizing that an incident broke the standing posture and collided with the street is, figuratively, just opening the cover of the operative dossier.

True analytical excavation investigates the subsequent chaos: measuring who retained the motor explosion, how the cycles of resistance reinvented themselves, the chronometer for the reestablishment of tactical order, the gap caused by the eventual loss of that yoke, and, culminating the forensic equation, how the subject's arms were physically isolated.

This dive points unappealably to the next bottleneck of the process: exerting physical crushing and positional restriction over a rebellious body passes, inevitably, through the harsh realization that subduing does not guarantee, by a long shot, the fluidity of handcuffing.
