COMBATIVES — Knowledge Before Confrontation.

About the Project

Combatives

Combatives is a study, research and educational project dedicated to understanding human conflict and the situations in which people must make decisions under risk, pressure and uncertainty.

Its field of interest begins before any physical response takes place. Prevention, situational awareness, human behavior, communication, mobility, decision-making and protection are central elements of the project.

Military history, strategy, martial arts, psychology, security, leadership, case studies and documented real-world experiences are used as sources of knowledge.

Combatives is built around a simple idea: in critical situations, seeing earlier, understanding more clearly and making the right decision can be more important than any physical capability.

The project does not exist to encourage confrontation. It exists to expand knowledge, awareness, available choices and the ability to protect.

Core Principle

Knowledge Before Confrontation.

Context

Reality does not begin with the fight.

Violence, abuse, conflict and vulnerability are not abstract concepts. They are measurable social realities. Understanding their scale helps move the discussion away from fantasies of confrontation and toward what actually matters: prevention, threat recognition, decision-making and protection.

644,000

reports recorded

Reports submitted through Brazil's national human-rights protection hotline.

Ligue 180 · Brazil · 2025

155,111

reports involving violence against women

Approximately 425 reports per day over the period.

UNICEF · INTERPOL · ECPAT

19%

of surveyed young people aged 12 to 17

Reported forms of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse during the period studied.

4.659M

rights violations recorded

A single report may contain multiple violations, illustrating the complexity of the cases recorded.

These numbers are not meant to create fear. They are meant to provide context. Security begins with the ability to recognize that risks exist, understand how they present themselves and develop responses that are proportionate, responsible and realistic.

Research

Research, history and human behavior

Combatives operates as an independent center for research, curation and content development focused on human conflict, strategy, leadership, martial culture, behavior under pressure and protection.

Wars, intelligence operations, expeditions, crises, urban violence, martial traditions and historic decisions all share one common element: human behavior under uncertainty.

Samurai, Okinawan traditions, Roman legions, explorers, commanders, strategists and contemporary doctrines are studied as sources of case material, decisions, failures, adaptations and principles.

The focus is less on determining who won and more on understanding why certain decisions worked, why others failed and what those episodes reveal about awareness, discipline, preparation and adaptation.

In this context, history is not decoration. It is a laboratory.

Method

Separating demonstration from reality

Real situations rarely unfold in an orderly way. People may be distracted, exhausted, accompanied by family members, inside unfamiliar environments or without the physical space needed to perform what they imagined they would do.

For that reason, Combatives does not treat personal safety as a collection of predetermined answers.

The project examines context, environment, behavior, pre-incident indicators, opportunities to disengage, access to assistance, mobility, communication and the consequences of each decision.

A technique may work during a controlled demonstration. That does not automatically make it the best decision in a real-world situation.

The central question is not merely “What should I do?” Other questions come first: What is happening? What may happen next? Is there still a way to prevent the situation from becoming worse?

Education

Combatives Academy

The Combatives Academy is the educational and practical arm of the project.

Workshops, lectures, training sessions, awareness exercises, scenario analysis and guided experiences transform research into applied learning.

Programs can be developed for companies, schools, families, communities and different groups, taking into account age, environment, mobility, routine and the risks most likely to be encountered.

The goal is not to create fighters or promote an illusion of invulnerability.

The priority is to develop awareness, self-control, communication, mobility and better decision-making under pressure.

Fields of Study and Application

From research to application.

Combatives organizes its content and programs across different fields. They overlap because real-world situations rarely belong to a single discipline.

01

Situational Awareness

Observing the environment, recognizing changes and identifying developing situations that may require attention.

02

Decision-Making

Studying choices made under pressure, uncertainty, incomplete information and limited time.

03

Human Behavior

Perception, attention, stress, communication and human responses during critical situations.

04

Children and Adolescents

Education focused on awareness, boundaries, communication, disengagement from unsafe situations and responsible help-seeking.

05

Women

Prevention, threat recognition, positioning, communication, mobility and access to protection networks.

06

Older Adults and Reduced Mobility

Preparation based on anticipation, environment, balance, support, communication and vulnerability reduction.

07

Companies and Organizations

Prevention culture, risk awareness, behavior during critical situations, communication and organizational preparedness.

08

Schools

Protection within educational environments, communication, procedures and the development of a preventive culture.

09

Families and Homes

Organizing routines, communication, environmental vulnerabilities, movement and practical planning.

10

Strategy and Leadership

Studying leaders, organizations, crises and historical decisions to better understand discipline, adaptation and preparation.

11

Martial Culture and Principles

Exploring principles related to posture, balance, movement, discipline, control and human development.

12

Real-World Case Studies

Responsible analysis of documented incidents to identify pre-incident indicators, decisions, failures and opportunities for prevention.

Responsibility

Protecting those who cannot rely on strength

One of the core principles of Combatives is recognizing that many of the people who most need protection cannot depend on strength, speed or martial experience.

Children, older adults, people with reduced mobility and individuals caught in unfavorable circumstances need strategies that match their real capabilities.

This completely changes the logic of preparation.

Awareness, communication, distance, mobility, environmental organization, access to assistance and early decision-making become central.

Protection does not necessarily mean confrontation.

Often, it means noticing sooner, leaving sooner, seeking help sooner or preventing a situation from reaching the point where physical confrontation appears to be the only remaining option.

Conclusion

Preparation for reality

No training can completely eliminate uncertainty.

No technique can make someone invulnerable.

No set of rules can anticipate every possible situation.

Preparation begins by understanding those limitations.

The purpose of Combatives is to reduce improvisation, expand awareness, improve decision-making and increase the possibilities for protection before, during and after a critical situation.

Because the best outcome is not always winning a confrontation.

Often, it is preventing one from happening at all.
